In the State of Florida homeowners who claim their home as their principle place of residence, known as their homestead, are entitled to a deduction of $25,000 from their assessed value if they file with the Miami-Dade County Tax Assessor.
When applying, please take the following documents in your name, otherwise your application cannot be processed. To be assured that you receive all the benefits you are entitled to, you must be a legal resident of Florida as well as own and be living in the residence as of January 1st. The two proofs of Florida Residence must be dated prior to January 1st. Application for Homestead Exemption must be filed on or before March 1st.
Note: For the 2000 tax year and subsequent tax rolls a Social Security Number will be required in order to file and to maintain your current Homestead Exemption.
You will need:
Any one of the following Proofs of Ownership:
- Warranty Deed
- Property Tax bill
- Notice of Proposed Property Taxes
- Homestead Exemption Automatic Renewal Receipt
- Computer Public Value Inquiry printout
Any two of the following Proofs of Florida Residence:
- Driver's Licenses
- Automobile Registration (not leased)
- Voter Registration
- 1040 Income Tax Return filed in Florida or W-2 From addressed in Florida
- Intangible Tax Return filed from Florida
- Florida Unemployment Compensation Registration
- Employment letter with Employer's letterhead
- Child's school report card or school letter attesting child's registration
- Moving van receipt from another county or state
- Doctor's letter with doctor's letterhead
- Church letter with church letterhead
- SSA-1099 fiscal year Social Security statement addressed in Florida
